What do yall think!!!

2008-11-30 15:29:53

About 2 months ago I was up to my consultants getting my hair
retighten and her teenage daughter loves standing over her mother as
she works and she noticed I had these little white things adhered to
some of my locks and she starting picking at them and saying that the
next time I came to the boards I should pose a question about this.
She said she also finds them in her own locs and its a curious
thing. Well, I don't have to tell you, I was more than a little
disturbed, and exclaimed to her and her mother, "Well its not lice is
it?", and they both laughed and said no, but then again, who has ever
really seen lice among us? I mentioned this to another sisterlock
wearer who was also loced by by consultant but now lives in another
state, and she said she too noticed that she has something white on
her locs that she was also curious about! I hve been very puzzled,
my sister who has had her locs now for almost a year says that the
teenager has also seen this type of thing in her locs. My head does
not itch and never really has in my 25 months. Before it was pointed
out to me that this was in my hair, I thought it was gray hair kinked
up in the loc, the loc just kind of looked salt and peppered. I just
called my consultant about it and she wonders if it might be old
dandruff that has adhered itself to the hairs. It makes me nervous,
and my hygiene is not of question, but I know these kinds of things
can happen to the best of us. What makes me feel a little better is
that I don't seem to be alone on this. I use a face cleaner that has
micro beads for exfoliating the skin and I had wondered if I had
rinsed this product up into my hair. Seems to be only the front on
my head and not at the root but about the middle of my locks and my
locks are about 10 inches. I had not posed the question sooner
because I just want this to go away, but I need some feedback! Thanks
in advance, Yolanda*

Re: What do yall think!!!

2008-11-30 14:58:46

Yolanda,
I and my daughter's have those too. Ya know how when a hair sheds
from the scalp it has that little white "bulb" on it? When I was
relaxed, that was the way I could tell if my hair was shedding or
breaking if it did or didn't have that on one end.
Okay, so as we lock, those hairs that normally would shed OUT, are
now trapped in the locs. Not only that, but it's been said that
sometimes it occurs when twisting or in your case, retigtening is
done a bit too tightly and sometimes hairs get pulled out of the
follicle.
But it's not lice and it's not dandruff. It's those white "bulbs"
from shed (or pulled out) hairs. They are most commonly seen in the
front hairline.
It's something I've also seen in extension braid-wearers as well!

I need to practice more on getting the loose hairs into the loc.
My consultant told me to grab those loose hairs and sorta of loosely twist it

retightening that loc to give a cleaner look. I plan to go to my consultant at

Any Pics of Large Locks?

2008-11-30 07:57:41

Hi all,
Can anyone direct me to photos of large sisterlocks? I've enjoyed looking at
all the pics in the files, but I'd like to find pics of someone with larger
sized
locks so I have a better idea what to expect as mine mature.
More specifically, I have large on 80% of my head, with mediums in the front,
and a size between large and "too large" (according to the squares on the
card) on the crown of my head.
Thanks,
Marissa

Questions about Sisterlocks

2008-11-29 16:38:08

I was on the intenet for 2-1/2 hours last night educating myself
about Sisterlocks. Sisters can't say enough good things about
them. But, there are pros and cons to everything, right? Can
someone tell me about them? I know, our hair texture varies from
person to person, but can someone tell me how the locks feel? Are
they soft to the touch? Lastly, they look heavy and hot, are they?
Thanks for any info you can give me.

Glad to be a part of Lockitup

2008-11-29 15:26:28

Hi
All I'm new to the group and very excited about
loc'ing. My name is Brandi and I've been natural
since 96' I'd been wearing my hair in a low almost
bald fade until Sept 02' I began growing my hair and
now I'm proud to say My birthdate with sisterlocs was
February 10, 2003 and I'm preparing for my 1st
tightening session. I love being natural and would
never ever ever ever ever go back to a perm! My mom
is even going natural now :0) she says I inspire her.
It's nice to be a part of something where everyone is
proud of who and what they are, no matter the shade or
texture. Thanks..

Retightening and joining locs

2008-11-29 11:51:41

Hi Everyone,
I took the retightening class one week ago. After about a week(I was
on vacation) I finished my hair. At first I felt overwhelmed, I
kept thinking my consultant really keeps my hair together and I
don't want mess it up. By the third day I was starting to feel
comfortable and found a way to keep the locs separated. It was only
then I really started to enjoy being able to do my own hair again.
During the first day I was joining locs I was able to separate all
except one. When I went to my consultant to see if she could
separate the joined locs, she advised me to leave those two
together. She told me, by me trying to separate( I wish I waited)
those two I had made the root bed weak on one of the locks.
Did anyone ever join locks that couldn't be separated? Does it grow
in a Y shape or will it fuse together? I am just trying to picture
it.
Right now, I am on the fence about retightening my hair all the
time. I want to get more comfortable using the hook tool and I need
to practice more on getting the loose hairs into the loc.
After one year, I am really enjoying my Sisterlocks. I never would
have thought that my fine hair, could ever look this full.

Re: starting locs

2008-11-27 16:47:40

Genuine Libra,
Sisterlocks are an option if you really want to keep the length of
the relaxed hair since they can be started with relaxed ends if you
have at least 2 inches of natural new growth. There is a Sisterlocks
consultant in Omaha/Bellvue. Her name is Cassandra Franklin and her
number is listed in the unofficial consultant list as 402-734-9963.
I live in Ames, Ia so I feel your pain about having no one to do your
hair. I opted for a consultant in Chicago because my family is there
and I visit a lot. I was planning to go to Cassandra at one point
though because I did not feel like driving six hours. That did not
work out but I did enjoy our phone conversations. I have no idea how
busy she is, but che may be able to help you.
I started with all natural hair. If you have questions about
starting Sisterlocks with relaxed ends I am sure that others in this
forum can help.

Re: [LockItUp] starting locs

2008-11-27 02:38:25

You need to cut all of the relaxer off. The relaxer is what's causing the
breakage. If you *really* want to hang on to that dead, damaged hair, you
can try the ORS carrot oil and keep your hair well moisturized with it.
But the best way to save your hair is to get rid of the relaxed hair.

having trouble finding nettle essential oil

2008-11-27 02:33:23

Hello all,
I cannot find nettle essential oil. I am wondering if anyone has
been able to find any? I have tried the internet, plus links
provided recently, but haven't been able to find any, I even tried
google search engine, and had a hard time finding anything. The one
site I found had "infused nettle oil" (I am not sure what
the 'infusing' process is) so I am not sure if it is OK for using in
hair recipes that call for 'nettle essential oil'.
Thanks to all in advance.

Hello All,
I did my own hair, and it looks pretty scary. I give the term "bad hair day"
new meaning. My problem is once it's dry (air drying not dryer drying) and I
take the clips off, my hair justs goes where ever it wants to. I palm roll it
very tightly (maybe that's the problem) then clip it with the metal clips. I'm
twisting it dry only because a co-worker suggested that I do it to avoid the
frizzies. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: dandruff/shampoo Sandy/Wanda

2008-11-25 21:19:02

Sandy,
Because vinegar is a fermented product. I looked it up and now see
that it actually kills mold, but I previously thought that it would
create mold because it is fermented. My mistake.
The 'rosemary/sage' rinse was what I was referring to. But since I
now see that the ACV is not mold related, I am going to ignore the
rosemary/sage one.
sisterlocks shampoo (white/green bottle) and sisterlocks conditioner
(white cream). One wash per week, if I try to wait longer, I get much
more dandruff.
Thanks. I just did my first baking soda shampoo Sunday and so far,
so good. I started with dry scalp and massaged it in, then did a
second time while the hair was wet and rinsed with water, and let it
towel/air dry.
Wanda, I saw one a few years ago, and he said it was dandruff, but
no fungal problems. He gave me Nizoral and I was OK until about a
year ago. I am going to try the alternative options for a while and
if they don't work, I will go back to the doc. Thanks.

Relatives hating on the locs....

2008-11-25 09:49:09

Here's my sense of humor on it...
I have a cousin who insists on being the first one to adventure into
something, or she is not interested at all. When I first decided to
loc, I was so excited I told all my friends and relatives (so that
they would be prepared). And like a parrot she was on the side line
saying - she won't do it, it won't last, she'll be outta this phase
by next year.
I tried to explain to her locing my hair was an individual thing.
She made remarks about all the stereo types I would be up against,
etc. But, I knew she was checking it out every step of the way.
(18 months later) We are in both in our mid to late 40's and she is
tripping even more on her hair these days. Usually I just suggest
this or that. But her latest spiral of events led me to say more.
She recently started having reactions to perms. And she can't stand
the fact that she is greying. Nothing seems to straighten her hair
enough, cover the grey, or help hold the curls (her words).
Finally, I just said - "girl, just join the journey and loc it up for
Pete's sake." And her neice, who was in the back seat of my car
said: "Oh, because you are loc'd up, you want the whole world to loc
up." I could not help but laugh at the confirmation they had been
talking about my locs. I candidly said, sweetheart why not - do you
see me running late tonight because I tried to "wet set" my hair 4
hours before departure on 100 curling rods, which did not take : )
only to end up with a pony tail.
I can tell she wants to loc - but her stubborn ways won't let her
because she did venture down the path first. Remember this story,
for when I update you after she caves in (smirk) - she's almost there!
Oh well - suffer on (I thought), you have no idea of the freedom you
are missing. THANK GOD I AM NO LONGER in that vicious hair cycle!
I simply love my new found freedom (looking out at the rain, which
used to cause me a "bad hair day").

But we had a wonderful turn out. About 75 - 100 people came thru the place
in the 4-hour period of time.
Marie Folden, Elaniece Alstork and myself (Salon Klassique and Kentucky

We had 5 vendor's present was also shared with us. We have tons pictures
but we need time to gather and post.
The thought of posting another web update right now 8:30 AM Sunday morning
makes me dizzy. I'm certain I will be better in a day or so.
WE need help documenting the event. So if there any volunteers who will
write that will help. Our next event is in the works for 45 to 60 days.
We grew out of our "living room" so we will have to hold it in a bigger room
next time. Rare Elegance was a great host ... but we already told the owner
Diane Mitchell we will have to move upstairs next time. I heard the food was
wonderful. . In all my moving around I dropped my plate on the floor. By
that time everything was gone. :(

being up-to-date, though. The Sisterlocks Home Office is really the place

If you are getting the color you want from a semi-permanat, then go
with that. I used a permanant color because I couldn't get what i
wanted. My hair has only been colored 2 weeks, so I can't really
speak to how it has effected my hair. So far, so good.
I used textures and tones and I had my husband help me. We used 2
boxes and my locks are just below my ears and around the base of my
neck. It will take more for longer hair.

Hey Ladies,
I went for my consultation this afternoon, I believe i fell in
love. Her name is Denise and she's great. My husband and I along
with our two babies went into her salon in Philadelphia and
immediately felt at home. She was professional and very friendly.
She didn't say one negative thing about my kinky wiry hair. This is
the first time I've gone to a hairdresser that didn't act as if
they're so knowledgeable about hair that I shouldn't ask question.
She's great!!! She answered all of my husbands question and she
played with my two sweeties. Needless to say, I'll be going back in
May to have my hair done. I'm sooooo excited. I would like to
thank everyone in this group for being so understanding and
wonderful. I am truly blessed.

believe me there's not much locking going on here.
I did find a lady in Plano TX which is appx. 3-4 hour drive! That's
not too bad, however considering the number of times you have to go
for tightening up that maybe a bit excessive. I'm not sure exactly
how often that would be but if I understand correctly for the 1st 6
months not including the initial locking that you have to get it
tightened up ever 4-6 weeks wow! If I decide to take the class to
learn to do this myself that's not only more money but I have to
find a class right?

Re: Extra hair growing between parts

2008-11-20 18:30:23

Hey Jeri,
I have had this happen to me. At first my consultant was concerned
that it was breakage or loose hairs coming out of the locks, but that
was not the case. I had breakage in the back of my head that started
recovering and went through a sprout-growing phase.
My consultant kept looking at the sprouts saying they were growing
longer and longer. She either pulled them into established locks, if
possible or started new locks where necessary. Contact your
consultant and she will be able to take care of it.
It was funny in the beginning, b/c my consultant thought I wasn't
taking care of my locks in the back as well, not separating well.
But over a few months time of observing it, she noticed I was having
a huge growth spurt and she had to do a lot of repair work there, but
it is all healthy and growing now!

Extra hair growing between parts

Has anyone had hair start to grow between the Sisterlocks parts? I
have 3-4 places on my head with "tufts" of hair. These are not
around my edges, but on my crown or in the back. I don't know if I
lost locks or if my head is extra healthy now and growing more hair?
The hair does not seem to have come out of established locks and it's
too long/thick to combine. Should I just have a consultant start
some new locks?
I plan to see my consultant, but I thought I'd ask here first.
Thanks in advance for any help you can share.

as much as it's going to... the coil is about as tight as it's
gonna get. So then you'll start to actually see the growth.
You'll start noticing more length to your locks.<<
Beautiful explanation, Sandy! The funny thing is that by
the time you notice length, you don't care about it anymore!

Yesterday I got my hair re-tightened. Before I looked in the mirror,
I was telling my consultant that I would be glad when I could see
some growth (Ive been going through the shrinkage phase). Then I
looked in the mirror, and there it was. My hair is really showing
its length now, just like you ladies promised. I love my

The herbal rinse (or apple cider vinegar rinse) is used after shampooing...
not every day.
How long have you been locked?
Exactly what products are you using on your hair now, and how often?
I would put it on a dry scalp. The recipe said to let it absorb the excess
oil and stuff from your scalp, so I'm thinking this works better with a dry
scalp.

dandruff/shampoo question esp. Sandy

2008-11-18 09:36:00

Hi Sandy,
Thanks for answering my questions about the shampoos.
I am not certain of which direction I want to go in. I have some
sensitivities to certain things, so the vinegar (mold) scares me a
little. The baking soda is scary because of me thinking I won't get
the stuff out of my hair! I am not into rinses as much, because it
takes a long time for my hair to dry and I don't have much energy to
be dealing with it for a long time everyday. At the same time, I am
am quite humiliated at the amount of dandruff my scalp is producing,
so I am quite desperate.
I guess I am going to try the baking soda first, as it is the
cheapest and dosen't require me to have to get my hair wet often.
I have one question; do I put the baking soda on a wet scalp and then
massage and rinse, or put it on my dry scalp and let it sit before
wetting it?
Signed,
Hazelpone (dazed, flaking and confused!)
God bless.

I have just received my second order of shea butter from Sandy and it
is even better than the first. It looks so good that I almost have

my feet. If your goal is to get rid of the ash, this is the stuff to
do it. Thanks for such a great product, Sandy!

Charmaine, I started buying hair adornments as soon as I got my locks. I
had a really nice collection of stuff by the time my hair was ready for them
I must admit, though, I started wearing them long before my hair was
ready. I'd hang those suckers on that straight dead permed hair and go on
about my business. You couldn't tell me my hair wasn't fine! LOL!
Now I purchase things from vendors at local hair seminars, from Tanya, and
from New Bein Enterprises... and I have LOTS of cool stuff to dangle in my
hair. :-) I love it.

Have you visited more than one consultant in your area. You should see at
least 2 or 3 if you can find that many. You may find the right person for
you at a lower price. I don't know about coming to your home,
though. There aren't very many hair stylists that make house call. Some

Former Relaxer Burns

2008-11-16 23:31:27

I heard that massaging the scalp area with sheep
sorrel (aka virgin black castor oil) should stimulate
growth in the former burn zones. I don't know the
consistency of the sheep sorrel and how it would
impact locks (although it would be the scalp and not
the hair) but it is all natural, and should solve your
problem Sandy.

ADMIN: Discussion Group Netiquette

2008-11-16 06:12:12

Since I'm always bugging y'all about trimming your posts, I thought I'd
post the following exerpt from "The Net: User Guidelines and Netiquette -
by Arlene Rinaldi". You can find this and other netiquette guidelines
here: http://www.fau.edu/netiquette/net/index.html
If you plan to continue hanging out on the internet, using email groups,
newsgroups, etc., it's a good idea for you to read the info below, save it,
and use it, as it applies to the internet as a whole... not just this email
group, but all email groups.
******************************
LISTSERVS/MAILING LISTS/ DISCUSSION GROUPS
Some mailing lists have low rates of traffic, others can flood your mailbox
with several hundred mail messages per day. Numerous incoming messages from
various listservers or mailing lists by multiple users, requires extensive
system processing which can tie up valuable resources. Subscription to
Interest Groups or Discussion Lists should be kept to a minimum and should
not exceed what your disk quota can handle, or you for that matter.
* When you join a list, monitor the messages for a few days to get a
feel for what common questions are asked, and what topics are deemed
off-limits. This is commonly referred to as lurking. When you feel
comfortable with the group, then start posting.
* See if there is a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) for a group that
you are interested in joining. Veteran members get annoyed when they see
the same questions every few weeks, or at the start of each semester. [Note
from Sandy: This one doesn't apply to this email group. Our purpose is to
answer and discuss... no matter how many times the same topic/question
comes up. We're here to help.]
* Follow any and all guidelines that the listowner has posted; the
listowner establishes the local "netiquette" standards for her/his list.
* Keep in mind that some discussion lists or Usenet groups have
members from many countries.
o Don't assume that they will understand a reference to TV, movies,
pop culture, or current events in your country. If you must use the
reference, please explain it.
o Don't assume that they understand geographical references that are
local or national.
* Don't join a list just to post inflammatory messages - this upsets
most system administrators and you could lose access to the net ("mail
bombing").
* Keep your questions and comments relevant to the focus of the
discussion group.
* If another person posts a comment or question that is off the
subject, do NOT reply to the list and keep the off- subject conversation
going publicly.
* When someone posts an off-subject note, and someone else criticizes
that posting, you should NOT submit a gratuitous note saying "well, I liked
it and lots of people probably did as well and you guys ought to lighten up
and not tell us to stick to the subject".
* When going away for more than a week, unsubscribe or suspend mail
from any mailing lists or LISTSERV services.
* If you can respond to someone else's question, do so through email.
Twenty people answering the same question on a large list can fill your
mailbox (and those of everyone else on the list) quickly. [Note from
Sandy: This is another one that doesn't apply to this group. We want the
answers to be posted here so we can all benefit from them.]
* When quoting another person, edit out whatever isn't directly
applicable to your reply. Don't let your mailing or Usenet software
automatically quote the entire body of messages you are replying to when
it's not necessary. Take the time to edit any quotations down to the
minimum necessary to provide context for your reply. Nobody likes reading a
long message in quotes for the third or fourth time, only to be followed by
a one line response: "Yeah, me too."
* Use discretion when forwarding a long mail message to group
addresses or distribution lists. It's preferable to reference the source of
a document and provide instructions on how to obtain a copy. If you must
post a long message, warn the readers with a statement at the top of the
mail message. Example: WARNING: LONG MESSAGE
* If you crosspost messages to multiple groups, include the name of
the groups at the top of the mail message with an apology for any duplication.
* Resist the temptation to "flame" others on the list. Remember that
these discussions are "public" and meant for constructive exchanges. Treat
the others on the list as you would want them to treat you.
* When posting a question to the discussion group, request that
responses be directed to you personally. Post a summary or answer to your
question to the group. [Note from Sandy: This one does not apply to this
email group.]
* When replying to a message posted to a discussion group, check the
address to be certain it's going to the intended location (person or
group). It can be very embarrassing if they reply incorrectly and post a
personal message to the entire discussion group that was intended for an
individual.
* When signing up for a group it is important to save your
subscription confirmation letter for reference. That way if you go on
vacation you will have the subscription address for suspending mail.
* Use your own personal Email account, don't subscribe using a shared
office account.
* Occasionally subscribers to the list who are not familiar with
proper netiquette will submit requests to SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE directly
to the list itself. Be tolerant of this activity, and possibly provide some
useful advice as opposed to being critical.
* Other people on the list are not interested in your desire to be
added or deleted. Any requests regarding administrative tasks such as being
added or removed from a list should be made to the appropriate area, not
the list itself.

I am thinking about locs

2008-11-16 02:25:39

I have been lurking for a while. I just wanted to thank everyone of you. You
are fabulous. Before joining this group I laughed at other people and would say
that black people have used so much relaxer that they are scared of their own
hair and needed to be taught the simple things like plaiting and twisting. I
thought that I knew it all but I am happy to say that this group has taught me
so much more....
I have been thinking of getting locks but have been scared by the permanence of
it. I like sisterlocks but they are very expensive here ( in the Caribbean,) and
more importantly makes you slave to your consultant. I am not comfortable not
being able to take care of my hair myself if I needed to. I like traditionals
but I am not sure that I can commit to the really fuzzy stage they go through
and I personally think I look better with "big hair" (volume) and traditionals
don't give you that until they mature. I have read Cherie King's book on
Bradeloz and I am tempted to try it . Has anyone here tried bradeloz? What has
your experience been? How do they compare to sisterlocks?
About myself:
I have been natural for a little under two years . My last relaxer was Feburary
24 2001. I have about 7 inches of hair. I am not sure what my hair type is
according to Andre ( I can't seem to find a site that tells you about his
system). I have lots of hair but it is very fine. It is kinda wirery and the
curl is not very tight. I guess it is the average type of hair for most black
persons.

Advice for a Maryland Newbie

I need advice, please, on:
1 - transitioning styles
2 - a SL Consultant in DC or Maryland

Re: Finally Locked

Hi:
Congratulations. Mae does great work and she is a wonderful person.
I'm in the Phoenix area, too. Be patient with your locks. Your locks
need extra TLC in this climate. Stick with the starter shampoo and
nothing else until your hair has settled. Placing moisturizing
conditioners in your hair before it has settled can increase slippage
and the amount of time that it takes for your hair to lock.

dandruff/shampoo question

2008-11-14 02:07:59

Hello all,
I was looking into the files on shampoo for dandruff and I saw the
one with baking soda.
1. Is there anything special I have to do to wash the baking soda out
completly?
2. I see that the recipe says not to use shampoo, so will the baking
soda clean the locks (hair, not just the scalp) also?
3. Can I use oils on my scalp in between, or is that going to make
the condition (dandruff/damaged scalp) worse?
Thanks in advance.
God bless,
Hazelpone

Re: [LockItUp] dandruff/shampoo question

2008-11-14 00:42:54

I haven't tried this one, but baking soda dissolves pretty well in water...
so I'm guessing it should rinse out ok with LOTS of rinsing.
I don't have an answer for that one. Maybe you can use shampoo a day or
two after this treatment, but not immediately after the treatment.
Sometimes oil on the scalp creates a bigger dandruff problem. Actually
many times the dandruff is caused by the oils we put on the scalp...
especially if the oil is clogging and coating the scalp and not allowing it
to breathe. So I would say that for the near term it's best not to use any
oils while you're using this dandruff treatment.
But again I'll say that I'm just guessing here. I haven't had a dandruff
problem and I haven't used this treatment.
OK... I just stopped for a minute and went to read the recipe you're
talking about. As I understand it because of the comment at the end about
the hair appearing dry at first, you shouldn't use any oils on your hair
with this treatment.
Have you tried the apple cider vinegar rinse?

Water is always good and especially good in your
dry climate. Normally, you need NO products in the
beginning but folks in dry climates might need a
little something (underscore LITTLE). I can relate
since I live in Colorado and sister, it is dry out
here! I wish they had the Moisture Creme back when I
first started. Follow your consultant's advice and
only use what she recommends.
anything else I could try once I can start washing my
hair more regularly. I was told to wait a month.<<
What I am reading here is that she says that you should
wait a month before trying any products. Right? The
sisterlocks moisture creme is good stuff. Ask her when
it is time for you to use some. A month might be the
right time for just a dab. You are not near ready for
any other products.
What you will notice is that you won't need nearly the
amount of products with SL - just like everyone is
saying here. Just follow your consultant's advice and
you'll be fine.

Finally Locked!

2008-11-12 14:05:05

Hello group,
Well, I finally made it to being sisterlocked... it's been one week
today actually. I'm so excited about having my locks in that I alomst
can stand myself! LOL! I got mine done by a WONDERFUL sister in
Phoenix AZ., named Mae Jackson... she is a wonderful warm and loving
sister.. and she's unbelievably fast. It was a great experience!
This is what I'd like to ask the group about the begiing stages of my
baby locks and maintainence...
I know I need the starter shampoo for quite a while in the beginning.
But what about conditioner? I've noticed many of you talk about the
moisture treatment conditioner ... should I start using this in the
beginning? Mae recommended that I use "Motions Leave In conditioner",
But I'm really interested in sticking to the sisterlocks product line.
I have given my hair the first washing, and I've sprayed it with
water everyday and the leave in conditioner as well... but I'm
curious about the sisterlocks conditioner, and anything else I could
try once I can start washing my hair more regularly. I was told to
wait a month.
Also, I'm interested in the "Herbal Moisture Spray"... is this
something I can start using right away? I need to know before I place
an order from the Sisterlocks home office.
What do you think ladies?
Thanks,

1 week SL'd and luvin' it!! :-)

Re: [LockItUp] Finally Locked!

2008-11-12 09:56:26

NO CONDITIONER!! The *only* thing you should be using on your hair right
now is the starter shampoo... that's all.
If you find that your scalp is too dry (this isn't always the case, but
some people find this problem), ask you consultant if you can use the SL
moisture treatment. It's a very light cream. If she says yes, then you
should *only* apply it to the scalp... and only apply it very
sparingly. Other than that, do not use anything else on your hair.. it
will hamper the locking process and maybe cause slippage.
You can wash your hair any time you want. But please follow the proper
instructions. Braid and band your locks before washing. Don't rub and
scrub when you shampoo -- just press and squeeze the shampoo through the
hair. The idea is to manipulate your new locks as little as possible. And
I'd skip the leave-in conditioner. You don't really need any conditioner.
Anything that softens your hair at this point will hamper the locking
process... but that is between you and your consultant. If she told you to
use it, and you like it, then use it.
OK. Wait a month before washing if that's what she told you. But then
braid & band and don't scrub.
No. This product is for mature locks only.
You need to stop thinking about "products" right now. New locks don't need
hair products, and many hair products have hair softeners in them that can
hamper your locking process. The starter shampoo is all you need to use
until your locks settle (approx 6 months or so -- depending on your hair
and how well you maintain it). Then you can start using other stuff.
And you'll be surprised to find -- even then -- that your hair really
doesn't need a lot of "stuff". All we need is a good shampoo and a light,
mild moisturizer. After awhile you'll notice that your hair and scalp
don't need moisturizing nearly as much as it used to. Due to the good care
you're giving your hair, and not putting stuff on your scalp, it will begin
to manufacture its own natural oil, so you won't need to give it extra
moisture as often.
That's my $.02.

Hi CC,
I took a look at your photos and I absolutively love the way your
locks look. Your hair is so thick.
I have been wearing SL for the past 14 months now and some are just
begining to lock. I have been having some bunching in areas. My
hair grows so fast so I have no problem with length. I have
scheduled a grooming for the middle of March to sort out the bunching
and the fuzzy hair, but all in all I am loving my locks and the
versatility it affords me. I experiment, sometimes I wear it
freestyle, some times I cornrow in two, sometimes I wear nubian
knots, whew. I love it.
One of these days I will get brave and post some pictures.

I wore two strand twists from

all my questions you guys will know why my consultant seemed tired of
them. Does anyone know of a sisterlocks consultant in Philly or in
Baltimore? I live in Newark, DE and I'm willing to go to either
place. I looked up two names on the internet, Denise Dixon-Roberts
and Gerry Mayo, and I wanted to know if these were good consultants.
Thanks for all the help. This group is fabulous.

Re: [LockItUp] Pre-sisterlocks transitioning

2008-11-10 03:19:22

No. It doesn't matter. Your consultant may take down 2 or 3 twists to put
in the test locks. Other than that, don't worry about it. Just go to the
consultation with your hair styled however you want.
Actually I forgot those test locks were there. I treated my hair just like
I normally do.... washing every other week, rolling & setting, etc. I had
my test locks for 4 months and they didn't come loose at all.

Pre-sisterlocks transitioning

2008-11-10 00:07:36

Hi All,
Just a question (or a few) that dawned on me. When you go for your
consultation, how is your hair styled? I wear mine in twists (2
strand). Would your hair have to be open? And during the period
between consultation and locking, what happens to your hair? How is
it styled? The consultant may want to have you wash your hair in
that time (but I don't wash my hair twisted).... how did you all go
about that without ruining the test locks?
Covering all bases.
Akoa

Thanks Arlanda

2008-11-09 22:43:12

. Helo Arlanda,
the more people I hear from the more normal i feel, thanks for
writing back. What did it look like when your hair settled? Do you
think your locks feel wiry and hard? These are some of my concerns.
If you have photos on another site or if you've seen a photo that
looks like your hair please let me know. Much love.

Hello everyone,
I decided to upload a couple of pictures to show my hair texture. I
received a response from Gina and I was ecstatic that someone else
has my hair type. Hugs and Kisses to ya, Gina. Anyone else who
cares to fess up about the fabulous kinkyness of their hair, look at
my photos under Brenda and give me an email. My hair is wet because
I'd just washed it. It's really dry and brittle when it's dry so
don't let the soft look fool yah.

New here, need help with lint problem

2008-11-08 19:29:24

Hello all,
This is my first time posting. I am very happy to see lock groups
for hair.
I have been with Sisterlocks for about 2 years. At first, my locks
were spotless at about 6 inches long. I was able to keep them clean
by constantly checking, and if I saw anything, I would use a tweezers
to get them out, no problem.
A few months ago, I became so sick that I couldn't keep up on my
hair. Well, now that I have some energy, I am horrified at how much
lint got caught up in my hair, especially the back.
I approached my loctician about this and what to do. She tried
wetting it and tried to get it out, but could not.
My question is: is there some other way to get lint out once it is
really "in there" or should I cut?
God bless,

Re: [LockItUp] SL Curiosity - Gymming vs Manipulation

2008-11-08 08:12:20

By manipulation, we mean braiding, rolling, using curling irons, etc. These
practices should be kept to a minimum in the first few months because they
pull the hair straight.. which hampers the locking process.
The activities you mention don't fall under that category. Rinsing sweat
and salt from your hair is fine... actually it's good. Our hair loves
water, and regular dousing will help it to lock. Just be sure to do your
braiding and banding when you shampoo your hair, and squeeze & press the
shampoo through your hair instead of rubbing and scrubbing.

Hi Christine,
I would be so grateful for your friend's email
address, and if you could give her a little warning
that strange people (and the world may be small, as I
am always in and out of Barbados, so I may know her).
As I sit here clearing out my twists to get them
washed (about a month to sisterlocks), I am trying to
enjoy this tedious task... because soon I won't have
this to deal with anymore!!!! Tell your friend that I
am family to the Lashley's in Christ Church.... she
may even know me.

SL Curiosity - Gymming vs Manipulation

2008-11-07 17:17:01

Hi All,
Just want to say thanks to Sandy and Denise for
clearing up the Aveda query that I had. But I have
another question (or questions) to pose to the group.
I understand that when you do get the sisterlocks,
that you have to ensure there is as little
manipulation as possible. With that said, how do we
deal with the sisterlocks while gymming, or running
around on a tennis court in 80+ degree weather, going
to the beach (on a weekly basis at times)? The
sweating and salt (from sweating and the sea) are
constant hair issues in the Virgin Islands,
particularly if you are active, or like me -
hyperactive. I know that once locked, it would be
easier... but what do I do in the beginning? Looking
forward to hearing from you and thanks for your time.
Seeking education,
Akoa

Re: Control Issues

2008-11-07 11:22:24

--Everyone thanks for the encourgement,
I'm normally a lurker, but this is a subject near and dear to my
heart. It is definitely a control issue. In my perm days my hair had
to look just right! Now that I am locked it is a true test of
patience. The funny this is my hair is locked in the back and doing
well, I have a problem with the front around the edges. I know it's
because I can see it and I an constantly messing with it, my hair is
very stiff and wirey so it's all over the place. It just irritates
me! I think Pat said that sometimes your are too close. I agree 100%.
I feel like I should have been much further along in the locking
process, but whose's to say. I've made up my mind I am going to
have to do better. Just relax and let go.

CC and girls was MORE PICS!!!!!!!!!!

2008-11-07 09:36:49

Wanda,
Thanks for the compliments. Neither girl has her Sisterlocks anymore. It's
been so long, I don't remember when they took them out. Aquilla took hers
out first, I do believe she is still natural, though. Her mother told me she
wasn't going to allow her to relax her hair anytime soon. Page had her
Sisterlocks removed last year during her Spring Break, which I think was in
April. She's wearing the cornrow styles. She tried the press and curl, but not
knowing what to do with all that natural hair proved too cumbersome for her,
so she went back to the braids. She wants a relaxer, but I told her not while
she lives in my house. When she leaves the home, she can do what she
wants with her hair.

How it will look#2

2008-11-06 23:14:36

I just had an ahh-ha moment. I was looking through the Files section
and I saw a file called the phases/stages of locking. Things make a
lot more sense now. I was looking at a lot of photos not realizing
that people were at different phases of the locking process. I
thought if I let my hair grow I would end up with perfect looking
locs, but everyone goes through the phases. Huh, who knew:) I
thought the nice even long locs were more likely to come from less
kinky hair, but it isn't always the case. Color me stupid:) I
finally understand why Sandy told me that it takes patience. That
file helped me more than anyone could know. Thank you, thank you,
thank you to whoever put that file on the site.
Brenda

Re: How it will look#2

2008-11-06 21:20:37

Brenda,
The Stages of Locking was given to me by my consultant. I was
voicing concerns that my locks didn't look like I thought they
should. It really clarified things for me, and I am glad to know
that it is helping others as well.
Beautiful locks are the result of much time, patience, discovery,
care and attention. Know that your locks, over time, will be
exquisite. Many of us have worried about the final outcome; just
know that your locks will go through many changes, but will
eventually be more beautiful that you can imagine.
Take care, and keep the faith!

Thanks for the lead... When I was considering SL's I spend so much time on
that web page. I even printed everything that I could so I could review it
on the bus. I am almost 1 month into traditional locs and I am slowly
learning to let go. I have serious control issues. This journey is
certainly a test.

Hello Charmaine,
Thanks for responding so quickly. I did live in Philly, I moved 4
months ago, but I still do everything in that area. I met with the
consultant almost a year ago and I can't remember the specifics of
it. I know I found at least three consultants in Philly and
surrounding areas. Check the official site and then ask those people
for referrels.
Hope this helps,
Brenda

Do you live/work/ or just play in Philly. I have traditional locs. I have only
spoken to one SL consultant here in the city but she wasn't taking any new
clients.

How will it look on me?

2008-11-04 23:12:35

Hello Everyone,
I joined the group almost a year ago and I'm still trying to
figure things out. I've had two consultations in Philly and I really
liked one of the women I saw, but she refused to do the tiny locs on
my hair. She told me that I needed to come to grips with my hair
type and be happy. I have to say that was wonderful advice, but I
haven't completely accepted it yet. When I was still getting my hair
permed everytime I changed stylist they would make comments about the
brillo pad on my head that I so lovingly called hair. I Just wanted
to know if there is anybody else out there with seriously kinky,
thick hair who has pictures on this site, so I can get some idea of
how my hair might look. I'm kinda frightened to get locs without
some idea of how my hair might look.
P.S. I recently cut off the perm and I'm truly loving the brillo
pad. It just feels right.

Re: [LockItUp] Aveda Products in Sisterlocks

2008-11-04 08:09:05

In the beginning, you should use *only* Sisterlocks products, as they are
specially formulated to help your Sisterlocks grow and mature. Only the
starter shampoo should be used. No conditioners, hair oils, etc. for the
first few months -- until your locks have set well enough that your
consultant tells you that you can start to use other products. Then you
can use hair oils, moisturizers, and other stuff... *but* it is still
recommended that you stick with SL products. And I can attest to the fact
that they are *very* good and work well with all natural hair... not just
Sisterlocks.
However, I have heard many people say how good the Aveda products work on
their Sisterlocks.
Hot & steamy, huh? PERFECT!!! Our hair loves water/moisture. Your hair
should lock very well and look lovely!!

Aveda Products in Sisterlocks

2008-11-04 04:21:00

Hi All,
I am a recent addition to the group (from and living in the Virgin
Islands) and I have made my consultation appointment for the first
week of March in Barbados. I have been to the official website more
times than I care to count (and Sandy's site is bookmarked to
favorites). My question is this: Has anyone tried using Aveda
haircare products in their sisterlocks? I am an Aveda addict for my
completely natural hair.
I also have one more question: How does tropical weather affect
sisterlocks? This is basically an all year season for me, so I would
love to know.... but I plan to track down some SL'ed women in
Barbados and ask them too.

I won't be trimming for a long time...I want my SL's to hit my shoulders or
longer before I start trimming.
Granted they hit my shoulder when I pull it out to see the length...but I am
talking bout hitting my shoulders w/o me pulling on them :) And I want the
middle part of my head to be longer...before I start cutting...well I'd have to
be loc'ed fully first anyway...right.
